Would be good to calculate a VMG function and display in dashboard as an optional instrument. Could not find an active VMG function anywhere in any of the software.

Clarification:
There are two types of Calculated VMG Velocity Made Good that would be very useful, in addition to VMG from instruments.
1. VMGm = Calculated VMG to Mark
2. VMGw = Calculated VMG to True Wind Direction
3. VMGn = From Nmea and instruments
Also calculated data should be indicated differently.
Perhaps these should all be separate items in Dashboard?

Why?

When sailing upwind or downwind, VMGw (to Wind direction) is a much more useful gauge because it remains constant and is a good yardstick for maintaining optimum angle and speed.

When sailing upwind or downwind, VMGm (to Mark) varies the closer you get to the mark.

Additionally I note that VMGn can be two types.
1. From GPS which is generally to a waypoint.
2. From Wind + Speedo Instruments which is generally to the wind direction.
I do not know how one would determine which it is, except by knowledge of the GPS or Instruments, or by actually doing calcs and comparing to determine which it is.
This task depends upon

In OpenCPN 3.0, the dashboard plugin already includes a VMG instrument:
http://opencpn.org/ocpn/dashboard_plugin/

Do you want a VMG calculated from the software itself using the actual position of the boat and the next waypoint instead of reading the one from the NMEA output of the GPS ?

This might be added as a feature to the dashboard, if no VMG is received from the serial port, we calculate it using the next selected way point.

My current setup uses either a GlobalSat BU-353 or a Garmin eTrex Legend Cx. Using either, there does not appear to be data for VMG making it to the VMG instrument for display....I'm guessing because neither outputs it. The Garmin Cx has VMG to next waypoint available as an on screen display...I do not know if it outputs it or not. What I'm suggesting is indeed calculating a VMG to the next waypoint within OpenCPN and displaying that on the dashboard if there is no data in the NMEA stream. Please don't close this one. :)
