Copyright issues ended the NGA-KAP project. It also has an impact in the ability to share GE-KAP overlays created with GE2KAP.

Instead of storing screenshots, GE does allow to use the existing cache in GE.

I would like to be able to overlay the GE image, using the plugin, and it should match and cover the shown chart. Maybe cover 100%, or just a little bit less, to show the chart only around the plugin display.

With this, the user "just" pre-fills the GE cache of an intended cruising area. Tools exist to automate this.

==> no copyright issues, except some people will attempt to share GE caches, which then is NOT a OpenCPN problem.

Additional comments about closing:  Yep, it would be nice, but unfortunately is technically impossible to do. The plugin is not able to control the GE viewport beyond what the GE and Windows APIs allow it to do. It's necessary to display a non-transparent GE window and take a screenshot of it and later make it transparent over the chart, which is OK in an asynchronous scenario using GE2KAP and KMLOverlay or similar technique, but it's unusable in real time... Connected to the internet there would be a way to do it in background using pretty much any online source of the satellite imagery tiles, but using GE we're unfortunately out of luck.
