OpenCPN Version 4.4.0 Released

The OpenCPN Development Team is proud to announce the release of OpenCPN Version 4.4.0

This version is a feature upgrade and maintenance release of OpenCPN.

OpenCPN is a cross platform electronic navigation system (ECS) supporting a variety of cartography standards and hardware interface protocols. Versions are available for Linux, Windows, Macintosh, and ARM computer architectures.
Since widespread introduction in 2008, OpenCPN has gained a solid reputation.

OpenCPN is running on hardware from tiny Raspberry Pis with 4" screens up to networked workstations. Specific user scenarios and needs are easily accommodated by using the Plug-in architecture and the wide scope of user settings.
A responsive international user and developer community together with integrated documentation help make installation and use of OpenCPN a pleasure.

Some of the features of OpenCPN include

Quilted Raster(RNC) and Vector(ENC) digital chart display
Full compliant support for official vector charts in S-57/S-63 format and InlandENCs
Industry standard GPS receiver interfacing, with "moving map" on-screen vessel tracking
AIS receiver interfacing with configurable target safety monitoring
Integrated Route, Track, and Waypoint database, with industry standard Import/Export capabilities
Tide and Current prediction, with on-screen overlay of predicted data.
Broad International Language support
PlugIn architecture allowing on-going third-party functional enhancements

OpenCPN is released under the GPLV2 license. The executable program and its source code are available for immediate, free, and unlimited download from sourceforge.net, and several other sources.

As a successor to OpenCPN Version 4.2, OpenCPN Version 4.4 contains many several features and enhanced functions.

Among them are:

..Support for GRIB V2 format files.
..Measurably improved performance and reliability over all supported platforms.

We hope you enjoy the new features of OpenCPN Version 4.4, and look forward to your continued feedback and support.

What's new in the OpenCPN version 4.2?

Plugins

OpenCPN 4.2 has it's own new "format" for plugins. The new plugins are available here.
Older plugins must be upgraded, unless you are using Mac OS X. Linux users that uses the ppa repository will have all the upgrading taken care of automatically. So this is mainly an issue for Windows users.

More integrated plugins in 4.2.0.

The Chart Downloader plugin has developed and matured to an essential tool. It is now an integrated part of OpenCPN. In other words, once you have downloaded OpenCPN this plugin is available.
Use it! It makes downloading and updating very easy.
Go to the Options -> Charts -> CharDownloader tab.
The plugin documentation is available through the "Help" button in the lower left corner of the dialog.

Available charts, see below

The World Magnetic Model (WMM) plugin, is now also integrated in the OpenCPN.
Magnetic variation calculation is now always based on the location of an object.

Main WMM dialog.

Live plugin button in the toolbar

The Grib plugin was integrated into OpenCPN well before version 4.2.
It has however benefited from continued development.
Note that  it's now possible to download GFS gribs with a resolution down to 0.25".

New Plugins

There has been a lot of development in the plugin area the last year, since the release of 4.0.

There is a new  major plugin OCPN Draw.
The plugin allows you to draw lines, point and areas on the chart and much more.
Documentation: http://opencpn.org/ocpn/Plugins_external_odraw
Discussion: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f134/ocpn-draw-and-boundary-143431.html

Other new plugins:
IAC Fleetcode
: Weather maps for South Pacific (Fiji), Brazil and North Atlantic
sQuidd.io: Squiddio makes its global user-sourced and user-maintained repository of sailing destinations (marinas, anchorages, yacht clubs, docks, fuel stations etc.) available as way points in OpenCPN through a plugin.

NMEA Connections

Some "temperamental" devices which should accept given sentences irrespective of the talker ID in fact only accept for example GPRMC and not ECRMC. Icom VHF is one example.
To take care of this it is now possible to configure the Talker ID.

The precision settings for autopilot APB and XTE sentences, has been harmonized and always use the same value.

User Interface

There is a new design of all the aton icons to agree with international standards.

Waypoints can now have range-rings attached. They are set individually for each waypoint.

Manual and timed automatic Toolbar hiding is now implemented.

Manual hiding:
Left-click on the handle just to the right of the life ring and ...

the toolbar minimizes to the icon seen just below "Navigate" in the

menu bar. Click this icon to restore the Toolbar

Auto hiding is set in the options dialog, see option "Enable Toolbar autohide" below

If you have a buddy or other vessel in close proximity all the time, the AIS alarms becomes a bit boring, and masks other more important alarms. To handle this it is now possible to supress this kind of alarms in Options ->Ships -> MMSI Properties.

AIS Quick Access to Controls with Menubar Enabled
Access to Menubar > AIS >  Controls and selections

Show AIS Targets
Hide Moored AIS Targets
Attenuate Less Critical Targets
Show AIS Target Tracks
Show CPA Alert Dialogues
Sound CPA Alarms
AIS Target Lists

Tablet Controls
For Tablets, GUI/Toolbar icon sizes and other graphic elements can be adjusted independent of Scaled Tablet Mode. Go to Options->User Interface

Tools and Icons are now using ScaledVectorGraphics (SVG)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scalable_Vector_Graphics

Chart Related

Charts with the "GD" string empty in the kap header is now treated as WGS84. This special case was missing in version 4.0.0. These charts has to be manually confirmed. Please check the opencpn.log to see which charts are affected.

Former Limitation Removed!
With the introduction of OpenCPN 4.2 using OpenGL display mode; Raster Mercator charts, Raster Transverse Mercator charts, Raster Polyconic charts and Raster skewed charts, of these same projections, may exist in the same quilt. The transition from one type of projection to another is seamless.

Re-enabled the ability to add a single chart to a group.
